Find out what has actually been approved
Look for written confirmation of the practitioner or service, number of sessions, dates and any conditions. A claim acceptance letter may not answer all of these questions.
Ask the claims manager whether the psychology referral is covered, whether further information is needed and when you should expect a response. Keep a note of the conversation.
When an initial appointment may be possible
The scheme includes limited circumstances where treatment can occur without prior insurer approval. They depend on the applicable rules, timing, previous treatment and provider requirements.
We check the arrangements for your referral. We do not advertise a guaranteed number of free sessions or assume that moving to a new psychologist restarts an entitlement.
If the request has been declined
Ask for the written decision and reasons. Check whether the decision concerns the claim itself, the proposed treatment, missing information or the requested provider.
Ask about review rights and independent advice. The Independent Review Office provides information on complaints and assistance. A treating psychologist can provide relevant clinical information but cannot promise a successful review.
Care while a decision is pending
Talk with your GP about support for your health while you wait. Ask us about any private or other funding options that may be available, including the cost and referral requirements.
Choosing to pay privately does not guarantee that an insurer will reimburse you later. Agree on the billing pathway before the appointment. Do not claim the same service from more than one payer.
Keep the next appointment clear
Before attending, confirm whether it is approved, awaiting a decision or privately funded. Contact us early if something changes or you cannot attend.
If your health becomes urgent, seek appropriate immediate care rather than waiting for an administrative decision. Call 000 in an emergency.
