A GP referral for WorkCover psychology

The information that helps us arrange the right appointment and check insurer funding.

Start with the treating doctor

Speak with your GP about symptoms, work-related events, medical care and the effect on daily life. The doctor can consider a psychology referral and the medical information needed for the claim.

WorkCover treatment and a Medicare Mental Health Treatment Plan are different funding arrangements. A Medicare plan does not, by itself, approve an insurer-funded psychology session.

What helps in the referral

  • The worker's contact details and consent for the referral.
  • The injury or concerns being referred, relevant history and the reason psychology is requested.
  • The nominated treating doctor's details and any relevant medical restrictions or risk information.
  • The claim number, insurer or claims manager and existing treatment approval, where available.

A preferred psychologist, clinic, language or telehealth request also helps. The referral need not contain unrelated personal information.

What if there is not yet an approval?

Send or discuss what is available and ask what needs to be checked. A referral and a claim number do not necessarily establish funding.

There are limited exceptions to prior approval under the scheme. Our team checks the applicable arrangements rather than assuming a fixed entitlement to initial sessions.

Treatment, assessments and certificates

Please identify whether the request is for treatment, a specific assessment or a report. These services have different purposes and funding requirements.

The initial certificate of capacity is a medical document completed by a doctor. Eligible SIRA-approved treating practitioners may issue certain subsequent certificates under the scheme rules. Ask which professional should complete the document you need.
